Abortion

I am a pro-life candidate.  I strongly believe that the child yet unborn is in fact alive and therefore of intrinsic value.  Furthermore, I believe that each child is welcomed into our society at the moment of conception.  The decision to bear child was made at that moment.  Innocent, human life should never be actively frustrated once created.

Balancing the Budget

Government spending is out of control. We need to have a budget, and stick to it. The government should be working in a net surplus instead of a net deficit.  Never has one country been so far in debt as the United States. This is bad for our economy and the strength of our dollar.  If the government is in the red, its not because we not taxing enough, its because we’re spending too much.  The system of governance outlined by our United States Constitution is not intended to redistribute wealth.  Protect our freedoms.  Protect our sovereignty.  Long live our Republic.

Border Security
National security and immigration starts at the border.  Border enforcement is vitally important on so many levels.  We must protect our sovereignty as a nation.  It is imperative that we know who is here and that it is for the right reasons.  I am in favor of a border fence and border monitoring technology.  I applaud the efforts of the minuteman project.

I believe there must be a pathway for citizen ship.  This pathway should not put immigrants in illegal standing in the front of the line.  Likewise, I disapprove of amnesty.  I believe this issue we further develop with debate, but I will not ever stand for amnesty and I hope everyone is treated humanely.  We value family here.  Family is what has made this country strong.  I will not ignore that, nor should we as a nation.  However, felons and repeat offenders of misdemeanors will be deported as will those who do not adhere to the pathway to citizenship that we set in place.

Education & Technology:

In politics, rhetoric tends to be stooped in bickering over the items and happenings of the past.  Study the past, learn from it, and move on.  We cannot allow ourselves to become stagnant in the global economy in which we compete.  Education, the greatest education achievable, should be available to our children.  Our children are our future.  How can the greatest nation, the leader of the free world, the land of opportunity, fall short in education to third world countries?  While I believe education is an issue to be left to the states, I want to see America's children succeed.  There was an era in our recent history where every child looked to the stars with great curiosity and saw math and science as the vehicles to get them there.  The repercussions of a great space program have echoed and intensified in our "Internet Age" lives since our local legend Neil Armstrong took that "Giant leap for mankind."

In general, I would like to see public schools structured in efficient and effective way.  Advanced students should be challenged to their fullest potential and students with special needs should receive appropriate attention.  The concept of leaving no child behind was honorable, but the bureaucracy it has created does not bode well for the republicans that created it.  Standardized testing can be a crucial tool and accountability in government is always a must.  However, a standardized test does not define the success or relative failure of a school.  Our schools are supposed to teach and develop understanding.  What we have now is a school system design around test-prep and not creating well-rounded individuals.  We must recognize that we have to embrace the individuality of each student, each school, and we do that at the lowest level of government possible.

Fiscal Responsibility

As you may know, I am an accountant by trade.  Beyond the necessary skills in arithmetic I have developed a keen eye for finding areas of unnecessary and wasteful spending.  My humble upbringings and conservative disposition have taught me the virtues of diligence and thrift.  I will be a herald to your cries for fiscal responsibility in Washington.

Gun Rights & 2nd Amendment

How prudent the men who daringly drafted our long-lasting Constitution. Before they signed the document we now hold so dear, they made clear that each person would be granted certain “inalienable rights.” The first of which is the right to express oneself freely. Equally important is the second of these rights, the right to bear arms and to assemble a militia if necessary.

It is only through the Second Amendment that we can really protect the First Amendment (or the others for that matter). We, as a free and open society, must be able to protect ourselves and our rights from both foreign threats and fellow citizens. Our founding fathers trusted us to revolt again should the government they created turn against the principles it was founded up.

Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. Guns don’t make criminals. Criminals make unjust use of guns. A society restricted to bear arms is a society vulnerable to whoever chooses to disregard that code of law. In a perfect world we would not need to have guns to protect us from each other.  I’d hate be the spoiler who tells you: “we don’t yet live in a perfect world!”

Lobbyists

When I get Washington, should I earn your vote, I will not allow myself to forget where I am from and the people who put me where I am.  You, my constituency, are my boss.  I have no interest in being hounded by a lobbyist.  I will not support their pork.  I seek nothing more than your satisfaction.  I am tired of our tax system making winners and losers out of the fine people of America.

National Language
I am in favor of having American English declared the official language of the federal government.

Social Security & Medicare
It is my belief that each individual is responsible for his/her own retirement and should never be reliant on the government for income at retirement.  With that said, the government should have a responsibility to each individual taxpayer to thank each person for providing years of service, and payment of taxes.  It is because of this, that Social Security needs to be around for years to come, not as a supplemental retirement income, but as an additional income after retirement.

Reformation of the social security system is an important issue concerning Americans today, how to fund without raising taxes is the biggest question facing reform.  With better fiscal responsibility within the federal government, the government will be able to fund Social Security, without raising taxes.

Medicare is an important Insurance provider for our senior's, and with the rising costs of health insurance around the nation, we need some form of insurance that all people, not just the retired, will be able to afford health insurance.  While I do not believe that the government should insure the people of this great nation, we can curb the cost of insurance through legislation.  A national ceiling on health insurance costs would be an option.

Iraq, Foreign Policy & War on Terror
"What are your views on foreign policy and the war on terror?"  - Chuck Hartman of Perintown

We need to win the war on terror.  We need to keep the fight off our soil.  We need to secure our borders. The surge is working.  Democracy breads peace.  However, we need to remember that no matter the outcome of Iraq, the fight does not end there.  We will always have to confront radical fascists and dictators in the name of freedom, but we need to do so in an intelligent and dignified manner.

1. If elected, what would be your plan to make substantial progress in Iraq?

The surge is working.  I am not going to pretend like I’ve had my boots on the ground in Iraq so I will be looking to those who have.  The advice we receive from our commanders is our best indicator of how we should manage the ground operations.  I do hope that we will have strong leadership in our commander in chief in the form of the Proven Senator from Arizona, Mr. John McCain.

2. How and when would you suggest that soldiers fighting in Iraq be brought home?

First of all, our troops should be brought home with honor.  They are doing their job and protecting our freedom with courage and determination.  We should bring them home when it is clear that the Iraq government is stable, able to defend itself, and an ally in the war against terror.

3. What do you see as the biggest mistake in the war in Iraq and what could have been done to avoid it?

I’ve said before that I will not second guess the judgment of my predecessors on this issue.  They were presented with a tough decision and the available intelligence and I thank them for standing strong on their convictions to protect America as they saw fit.

However, the war and our all of objectives should have been better communicated from the beginning.  I also believe that more troops should have been sent in from the beginning.  Though, we successfully sent a clear message around the world that America would not be intimidated neither by terror or tyrant as we swept to victory in a very short period of time.

Phone Incident
"Why did your campaign send an automated call to my house at 11:17 p/m last Friday night?"

An accidental series of automated phone calls to 695 numbers was initiated by a staffer.  The incident was halted just after they were sent to query saving the interruption of  many more voters.  I personally apologize for the incident and hope that it will not stand between us and the issues that I stand for.  Thank you.

The "Fair Tax"
"Are you in favor of the Fair Tax? If not, why." - Janet Phillips of Montgomery January 16, 2008

As you may know, I am an accountant—a professional tax preparer; its’ my job.  I think you get the point, but in all seriousness:  At this time I do not find the Fair Tax proposal as being a viable option.  There are some very pressing issues that I would like to see answered first.  Don’t get me wrong, I want the greatest nation in the world to have a tax system worthy of reflecting the ingenuity and splendor of this land.  Our government should be working for the people, with the people, and not the other way around.  That’s why I am running for congress on a grassroots effort.

I want to stop taxing productivity and free the hands of small businesses and the middle class.  The fair tax, or something similar, is a great goal to set our sights upon.  However, in this election it is more prudent for me to propose legislation that has a chance to survive during this coming term.  The flat tax should be our next step and in the meantime the Fair Tax can be tweaked and gain a true mandate (bipartisan demand for it) from the people.

Abortion in Case of Rape
"What about a young girl whose family member rapes her and gets her pregnant? Is that consenting? I don't think so, or the young female walking home at night and being dragged into an alley and being forced upon, ends up pregnant. Is that consenting? I don't think so. I'm not sure that the exact issue is when the fetus is actually alive, I believe it is a woman's right to decide what she can do with her own body. There definitely should be restrictions on this but still think it is a choice."  - Anonymous  January 11, 2008

By no means do I condone the atrocities that the women in this circumstance suffer from. Crimes that violate the woman’s right to choose (consent) are indeed an infringement on her rights and show utter disregard to her human dignity. The perpetrators should be sentenced to the fullest extent of the law -- which I hope to further strengthen.

Let me be clear: there is only one person responsible and that is the perpetrator. The woman did not bring it upon herself. In the same breathe, nor is the life (the fetus) that developed in her womb at fault. All life being created equal suggests to me that the unborn child shares in our declared right to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

Many argue that the right to choose is of the utmost importance. I argue that there is a right to choose; a choice is on the commencement of consensual intercourse. Without the consent of the female, there really was no choice made. I believe this woman should choose to take the pregnancy to term, however; in this instance, they should have a choice.  Several steps must be taken to justify such an abortion: 1. A Police Report Must Be Filed 2.  A testimony, to be used in trial of the perpetrator, must be recorded. 3.  The abortion must take place in the First trimester of the pregnancy.  4.  I would like this woman to receive counseling, before the procedure to inform the woman.  As we know there are a variety of emotional and physical repercussions.  All options, including adoption, should be presented to the woman before the procedure takes place.

The only thing any lawmaker can do is see to it that she, her child, and others like them are protected and find justice under the law.  Again, I am pro-life, but I can empathize with a woman who has been dramatically traumatized by the crime committed against her and must separate herself from the traumatic event.
